gardening books for kids

Do you plan to have a garden this summer? Bring your kids along with you! They will learn so much as they plant, water, and harvest the flowers and vegetables. These children’s books will inspire you with gardening ideas you may want to try with your kids.

We have all been anticipating the wonderful transformations that spring and summer bring, and now it is finally here! As we finish our school year, we are also preparing to plant a garden.

Our young gardeners are ready to start planting.  We like to give our kids a little section of their own garden so they can plant whatever they wish. Our preschoolers who are still learning about gardening tag along and help while we water and weed in the garden.

Gardening is an activity that (for our household) gets the whole family involved and excited about the plants that will soon produce vegetables.

These are some of our favorite books about gardening!

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

This picture book follows the life cycles of a seed. It begins in autumn as the wind blows the flower seeds into the air. The seed lands in a few places where it cannot grow like the icy mountains and the hot, dry desert. At last it lands on the earth and snow covers it during winter. Finally, spring arrives and the tiny seed begins to grow! It shoots its roots down in the soil as it also pushes up through the ground to the sun above. Next, it grows beside bigger plants, but slowly, little by little, it becomes a large plant with a beautiful flower. Finally, it grows as tall as a house!

The Autobiography of George Müller

“When sight ceases, it is time for faith to work.” George Mueller lived out his life in faith, not trusting in himself or anyone else to help him through many struggles. After a powerful conversion experience as a young adult, he dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He founded many orphanages and schools for children and cared for 10,024 orphans in his lifetime. Although he was not at all rich, the Lord supplied exactly what he needed when he needed it. He never had to ask anyone for money. He faced many trials, such as the siege in Fort Mifflin, harsh war conditions, and the government’s unfulfilled promises after the war was over. He died seventy-plus years later, although his writings continue to impact the modern world.

Reading books with your little ones helps foster the bond you have with your kids. As Mother’s Day draws near, these picture books will remind you both of the special love between mother and child. Give one of these picture books to a new mom, or enjoy reading this list of books with your children!

I don’t know about you, but my kids love it when I read books or poems to them about mother love. One of my favorite poems is Only One Mother by George Cooper

Only One Mother by George Cooper

Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky,
Hundreds of shells on the shore together,
Hundreds of birds that go singing by,
Hundreds of birds in the sunny weather.

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over.

If you want to have a wonderful Mother’s Day this year, try having this attitude. Rather than expecting appreciation or gifts from your husband and children, focus instead on the wonderful blessing it is to have children and a family. Reflect on the blessings of the other mothers in your life.

Do you have a preschool child who is starting to understand number concepts? These interactive counting picture books will help your preschooler learn to count in a way that is fun and engaging!

As a homeschool mom of 15+ years, I think the best way for young children to learn to count is through play and games. As your preschool child shows awareness of number order, however, reading interactive picture books is a fantastic enrichment activity to enhance his or her understanding.

My preschoolers love these counting books! We read them over and over together.

Over in the Meadow by Paul Galdone

My daughter (now eight years old) used to love this book through her toddler years, asking constantly for me to read this book to her. Because of its rhyming text, I like to sing this book when I read it to my little learners. Here is the link to the tune I sing. Every number up to ten shows a mother and her children, starting with a mother turtle with her little turtle one to a mother fox and her little foxes ten.

easter books for kids

Because the resurrection of Jesus is central to the Christian faith, I want to emphasize traditions in our home that tell the true story of Easter. As parents, we often spend a lot of time on Christmas preparations to celebrate the birth of Christ, but I want our kids to experience that same anticipation with Easter.

One great way to impress the story of Christ’s death and resurrection on our kids’ hearts is by reading them excellent picture books that tell the Easter story. Much like a prism shows different colors of light depending on the angle you look through it, these wonderful Easter books point to the resurrection of Christ in different ways.

The Tale of Three Trees Retold by Angela Elwell Hunt

Three trees talk about what they want to be when they grow up. The first wants to be a great treasure chest. The second tree, a big ship. The third tree wants to be tall so that when people look up to it, they think of God. Although they didn’t know it at first, they were used for so much more than their intended purpose. One is used for the manger where Jesus was laid; the second was used as the boat Jesus sailed in when he calmed the storm. And the third became the cross Jesus died on. This classic story is one of our favorite children’s Easter books.

Teaching our kids to follow through with a difficult task is a life skill that will help them as adults. This list of books will help your children see the value of persevering through challenging problems.

When my kids were little, I taught them this poem to remind them to persevere even when it seems hopeless that they will succeed.

Try, Try Again
’Tis a lesson you should heed,
Try, try again;
If at first you don’t succeed,
Try, try again;
Then your courage should appear,
For, if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear;
Try, try, again.
-Anonymous

Another way to show kids the valuable lessons of perseverance is to read books with characters who face and conquer insurmountable challenges. Through the books we read, let’s emphasize the rewards of persevering by observing people who accomplished great things because of their determination.

King Arthur and His Knights by Jim Weiss

Weiss is an excellent storytellerr! This Arthurian retelling is wonderful to use with young readers or kids who are averse to reading books, but who might rather choose to listen as they are fidgeting with something else.

The narrator named Sir Bedivere (the first to be knighted by King Arthur) introduces this splendidly arranged audiobook, followed by the well-read story retold by Jim Weiss. Arthur is originally trained by Merlin, the renowned wizard, and grows to become a great king as Merlin guides him. Each character’s story is splendidly woven into the King Arthur legend, explaining how they earn their way to knighthood.

Of Swords and Sorcerers: the adventure of King Arthur and his Knights by Margaret Hodges and Margery Evernden

One of our kids’s favorite books is Hodge’s book St. George and the Dragon. Younger children will especially love this shorter version of King Arthur’s classic.

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green

Our personal favorite! The enchanting tales of King Arthur are written in an extraordinary, engaging way that is great for middle school and high school age kids. It has been read and loved by many of my kids! It is a great selection for medieval literature, presenting a great description of all of King Arthur’s adventures. Beginning when he finds the sword excalibur, and the lady of the lake, to the quest of the Holy Grail, all while gaining the brave knights Sir Gawain, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad, and the entire assembly of the knights of the round table.

The Sword and the Circle Series by Rosemary Sutcliff

This is probably the most descriptive of British history and King Arthur’s reign. It is great for a wide range of ages because of its bright and intricate sketches that describe the story on every page. The stories unfold as Merlin guides Arthur, the king of Britain, through all of the many threats to him and his kingdom, including Arthur’s sister Morgana Le Fay who is an evil sorceress. We have read only the first book in this trilogy, but following The Sword and the Circle are The Light Beyond the Forest, and The Road to Camlann.

The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle

In this classic book, Pyle uses some liberties in his tales which are not seen in earlier versions of Arthurian legends by others like Sidney Lanier and Sir Thomas Malory.  The tale of King Arthur and his reign is split up in this book into several sections, each one giving a very detailed account of all of the adventures in the realm of Logres, following Arthur’s knights and Merlin’s magic as they and their king fight for justice and chivalrously strive to protect peace.

Once and Future King by T. H. White

Best for an older reader, Once and Future King is more loosely based around the tales of King Arthur, describing the growth of Arthur in both strength and wisdom, and the turmoil between Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot, one of the great knights of the Round Table.

Resources that have the King Arthur Story In Them

Our Island Story by H. E. Marshall

Our Island Story is a book I have read many times to my kids. They love it when I read the stories from this book, especially the ones about Arthur!

Arthur’s story begins in Chapter 8 with Vortigern and a young boy named Constans. It also tells about Uther Pendragon, Arthur’s father. Chapter 12 tells of Arthur’s beginning, magnificently pulling the famous sword from the rock, and eventually becoming king. Chapter 13 concludes the section about King Arthur. It tells of the building of Arthur’s kingdom, and the founding of the Round Table and the honorable knights that sat before it.

Idylls of the King by Alfred Lord Tennyson (poem)

Our kids enjoy reciting Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poems Crossing the Bar nd Charge of the Light Brigade. We often recite these aloud in morning time. In this Tennyson poem, the story of King Arthur is written with a flow of heroism and sorrow that is unveiled in the entirety of King Arthur’s reign. This is a long poem, so I would recommend it for an older child or possibly a child who is already familiar with Arthur’s stories and would benefit from more details.
